Quick Answer

Choose Swedish if you want long, smooth strokes and light-to-medium pressure over the whole body. Choose Shiatsu if you prefer firm, steady pressure from thumbs and palms, one point at a time. At Relax Massage in Lancaster, both are $40 for 30 minutes or $60 for 60.

What Swedish feels like

Swedish glides. Long, even strokes and gentle kneading move over the back, legs, arms, and shoulders.

The pressure stays light to medium, and the rhythm never changes suddenly. More on our Swedish Massage page.

What Shiatsu feels like

Shiatsu presses. Your therapist leans in with thumbs and palms, holds, then moves to the next point.

It feels firm and steady, without long strokes. More on our Shiatsu Massage page.

How to choose

Choose by the touch you enjoy. If you like to be soothed, pick Swedish. If you like firm, even pressure, pick Shiatsu.

Guests with tight shoulders from a desk or a long drive often like Shiatsu. First-timers usually start with Swedish.

When pressure feels like too much

If you tense up or hold your breath, the pressure is too strong. Good pressure feels firm while you keep breathing easily.

Say so right away, and your therapist adjusts.

Can you have a bit of both?

Yes. Ask for a Swedish session with steady pressure on one or two tight spots.

Point them out before you start, so your therapist can plan the time.
